Sightings around a property near Chesnee

YEAR: 1968

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: July

DATE: 18

STATE: South Carolina

COUNTY: Spartanburg County

LOCATION DETAILS: South of Chesnee, S.C. about 1/2 mile from the nearest road.

NEAREST TOWN: Chesnee, S.C.

NEAREST ROAD: U.S. Hwy. 221 North

OBSERVED:
Years ago, my brother, two cousins and I were at a creek near my father's place of business when we decided to go swimming. After 20 or thirty minutes of this, I decided to lie on the sand about 20 yards from the creek bank. All of a sudden, my three companions came running by me and told me to "get up and run!" I did this, but I looked back at the creek. All I could make out was a large, hairy figure leaning on a large tree trunk beside the creek. We ran for a couple hundred yards and up a very steep bank to get away from this creature. This bank was a support for a railroad track and was nearly straight up for about 50 feet. It was lined with pine trees about twelve feet tall. When we reached the top of the bank we thought that we were safe. Not so! We heard what sounded like a horse running towards us. Whatever it was started up the embankment at a high rate of speed. It pushed the pine trees out of the way. It had to be extremely strong to move them the way that it did. We had no option except to jump on the other side of the hill into briars and vines and "run for our lives." We told our dad, but after looking at the area, he decided not to contact the police. My brother said it was large and hairy. He said that it looked like pictures in books that we had seen. I have told this story for years. I still get chills thinking about this experience!

ALSO NOTICED: We had heard that the cattle farmer who owned the pasture had mentioned earlier that he found several of his calves killed near this location.

OTHER WITNESSES: There were four of us. The others were playing in the creek when one of them noticed the creature watching them. It did not threaten us until we ran. Maybe it was just curious!

OTHER STORIES: Yes. My best friend and I were working late at our place of business. This is within 1/4 mile from where the other incident occurred. We had heard noises all evening near the building where we were working. When we were leaving (around 10:00 P.M.) My friend pushed me aside and said to look towards a certain location. He saw something, or someone, that was looking at us. He had a rifle and shot into the air. Whatever or whoever it was, it ran. It was BIG! All I could observe about it was its large-stepping gait and how it managed to run through all the cars and bushes without hitting one thing in its path!!

TIME AND CONDITIONS: The first incident was around 11:00 A.M. on a bright, sunny day. The incident in 1980 started around 5:00 P.M and went to about 10:00 P.M.

ENVIRONMENT: It occured in a rather remote part of the county where there is a large creek that runs through woods and pasture land. This incident happened on the creek and through the brush near the pasture. There are some marshy areas nearby.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator :Leevon Patrick:

The first encounter happened when he was a youth during the summer of 1968. He and his friends used to frequent a favorite swimming hole along a creek in the woods. A tree grows up from the embankment and hangs over the water. The witness was laying in the sun when his cousins started yelling. The witness glanced at an animal covered in dark hair hanging around the tree where they had just been playing 30 minutes previously. At first the witness thought it was a bear because it was crouched down around the tree. However, after the boys ran up the embankment onto the railroad tracks they turned and noticed this thing was following them. He described the trees swaying and pushed to the sides. They dove down into the thickets on the other side and ran home. The witness was not sure what the animal was but thought it unusual for even a bear to persue in that manner. He also added that whatever it was, did not persue them to the other side.

The second incident occured in April of 1980. He was at his family's place of business after hours and was working on a friends car 500-600 yards from the main office. While beneath the car, he heard footsteps coming up near the car. Thinking it was his friend or another employee, he asked for a wrench but no one responded. He also recalled hearing snorts, sneezing and bangs throughout the late afternoon. When he and his friend were locking up for the night they noticed a figure with head and hands peering around the corner from a building 15 to 20 yards away. His friend thinking it an intruder, shot his gun into the air and the figure took off into the woods. He said although it was night, he could make out the clear distinction of its head and hands due to a light on the outbuilding. He described the figure as all black, over 6 feet in height and about 3 feet wide. He described it as really fast and unusually nimble. It made heavy footfalls once in the woods.

Both encounters and other bigfoot activity have occured on and near his family's auto repair business which consists of numerous acres of old cars and parts surrounded by creeks and mixed hardwoods. Although the witness now devotes most of his time to his family business, he was a science and algebra teacher in the state of SC for over 20 years; a very reputable and credible member of his community.
