Man recalls a late night encounter while parking in a remote area north of Splendora

YEAR: 1979/1980

SEASON: Spring

STATE: Texas

COUNTY: Liberty County

LOCATION DETAILS: East of Highway 59 about 5 miles north of Splendora and 4 or so miles south of Cleveland. Not sure of the name of the road.

NEAREST ROAD: Highway 59

OBSERVED: Late one spring evening in 1979 or 1980 a young lady and I were parked on a pipeline off of a road to the east of Highway 59 a few miles north of Splendora. We had been at this spot for about 45 minutes. I thought I heard a noise come from in front of us, like a rustling of the trees or undergrowth. I sat up and turned on the headlights and saw a very large creature standing about six feet from the front of my truck. It stood at least seven feet tall and possibly taller, was covered in dark brown or reddish brown hair. I quickly started the truck and backed away, when I turned back to get another look at the creature it was gone. I wasn't able to get a clear look at the face.

OTHER WITNESSES: One other person was present but did not see anything.

ENVIRONMENT: Pipeline running east/west bordered on each side by dense pine and hardwood forest.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Sybilla Irwin:

• Witness had parked his truck right up to the woods. When he heard something immediately in front of his truck, he hit the headlights, which illuminated the area of the creature from the waist to the shoulders. Its face was not seen.

• The creature was facing the truck. It was massive in the shoulder area being over four ft in width.

• Creature was stocky and muscular with an approximate weight of 350 to 400 lbs. He estimates it’s height being seven or eight ft tall.

• Hair covered the parts of its body that he saw. It was two to three inches long, nasty and matted. It was auburn in color.

• The witness’ immediate reaction was for the protection of his occupant. He threw the truck in reverse, instinctively looking back and flooring the truck. When he looked forward again, the creature was gone. He told her, “We need to get out of here!”

• The witness returned to the area within a week but did not see or hear anything unusual.

• This sighting area is slightly west of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Size: 97,168 acres. Big Thicket National Preserve comprises 9 land units and 6 water corridors in eastern Texas. It is also within miles of the Sam Houston National Forest: Size: 161,508 acres with 47,609 acres in Montgomery County, 59,746 acres in San Jacinto County, and 54,153 acres in Walker County.
