COUNTY: Surry County
LOCATION DETAILS: [GPS coordinates for where the figure was walking:
NEAREST TOWN: Surry Virginia
NEAREST ROAD: Route 626 (Beechland road)
OBSERVED: On December 20, 2021, while my grandson and I were still hunting for white tail deer in Eastern Virginia, at 4:40 pm we heard what sounded like two wood blocks being hit together. Within seconds we saw an animal of some sort, traveling upright, covered in smooth black fur, moving southwest, to northeast very quickly. We could only see from about the animal's upper thigh upward. The head was round with no visible neck, and we could see no facial features. We saw the animal only from its left side.
From the moment it first appeared, until it moved out of sight, was only about 3-5 seconds. In that span of time it covered approximately 60 yards through thick brush, over uneven terrain.
There was a stiff breeze from the East/Northeast, so I don't believe that the animal scented us, or knew we were there.
I have been a hunter, a trapper, camper and woodsman for more than 50 of my 62 years. This animal was upright (on 2 legs). It definitely was not a bear. I have seen many bears. I could not identify it at all. I have been in the woods every day since with a video camera.
I found what I believe to be stick structures and 2 dens, but I don't know what animal they belong to. I am puzzled, but committed to identifying this animal, if I can. I and 4 friends are going out tomorrow night with some thermal imaging equipment and some super sensitive sound recorders.
ALSO NOTICED: I have never heard any animal make the sound of wood blocks being knocked together. Five minutes after the animal disappeared there was a loud thud, as if a large tree limb had fallen.
OTHER WITNESSES: Myself, and my eleven year old grandson.
OTHER STORIES: Williamsburg Virginia, Hopewell Virginia, The Great Dismal Swamp Virginia and Meherrin Virgina
TIME AND CONDITIONS: 4:40 pm
ENVIRONMENT: uneven terrain, thick brush
Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Matthew Moneymaker:
I spoke with both witnesess by phone, separately. The grandson lives with his parents in the Newport News area.
The grandfather is Jeffery Hogge Sr. He is 62 years old and has lived on the 9.5 acre property since 2003. He is a third-generation commernical fisherman on Cheasapeake Bay, now retired. He is very credible. The grandson was the first to see the figure walking away briskly.
Jeff Sr. will make himself and his grandson available for interview by local newspaper journalists upon request.
As stated in his report, the two of them were hunting white tail deer on 12/20/21. They were laying in wait just before sundown when they heard wood knocks and then saw the large figure walking away from them quickly, less than 50 yards away. They had a profile view of it. Both were certain it was tall and on two legs and covered with dark fur.
He has been looking around in the same area every day since the incident occurred but has not seen anything else, except for possible brush markers in the woods.
There's a neighbor and his wife on the other side of Beechland Road, just up the road, on the other side of the Green Swamp. After Jeff Sr. and his grandson had their sighting, the neighbor approached Jeff Sr. out of the blue to ask if he has seen any large hairy creatures around there. The middle-aged neighbor couple recently moved to the property but do not live inside the dilapidated structure. Rather, they live in a camper/trailer nex to it. In the past couple of weeks the wife said a tall dark hairy creature looked at her through the window of the camper/trailer at night. That is what prompted the question to Jeff Sr., who then told the neighbor about the sighting by him and his grandson.
