Footprint find, series of screams, and a feeling of being watched on a family property in central Ohio
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
COUNTY: Champaign County
LOCATION DETAILS: Near Cable, Ohio off of State Route 296.
NEAREST TOWN: Cable
NEAREST ROAD: State Route 296
OBSERVED: My cousins and I are very into fishing...and I'm very into hunting and being outdoors...there is rarely a time when I wont be outside when the weather permits it. I have never really seen anything around here but other things have led me to believe that around here when you are in the woods ... you are most definitely not alone. The first of the occurrences around here was when I was around eight. My grandfather and I were walking along a trail in our woods (we were mushroom hunting) when we came to the end of our property at the edge of a creek bed. My grandfather called me over to see something...of course I was too young to think anything of it at the time, but clear as day right there in the soft sand was a footprint...my grandpa wears a size 10 or 11 and this print was much larger in size. Some of the more recent occurrences happened at my cousins pond..it's heavily wooded and kind of secluded. On numerous times we were sitting around doing some late night catfishing when we would all (sometimes there were four people present) feel something watching us. That would sometimes lead to noises that were definitely not coyote or deer. It would startle us but we kept the lanterns burning. If it got out of hand, and it seemed as though whatever it was angry, we would go into the camper to turn in. We never really mentioned it to my aunt until one night we came back because it sounded like something was beating the crap out of a pack of coyotes. We asked her if she ever saw anything weird or heard anything. She said that one evening when she was out hanging laundry..it was just getting dark during the summer when she heard something yelling and carrying on at the fence line. At that point she could hear it coming closer so she went inside and locked the door. I have at several different times been hunting and smelled something nasty like a skunk but stronger. After I smelled that, I'd always hear twigs snapping in the distance. For a long time I always thought it was a deer until I watched a show on the travel channel titled BIGFOOTVILLE....now I think I have and idea about whats been watching us.
ALSO NOTICED: The smell.....it was disgusting, the footprint was huge. I wear a size 14 now and I'm sure that the print I saw with my grandpa was much bigger.
OTHER WITNESSES: As many as six witnesses that were all carrying on normal buisness. My aunt was hanging laundry, we were fishing, hunting, or looking for mushrooms.
OTHER STORIES: Lots of them around the local railroad tracks and a road that several people have heard or seen things.
TIME AND CONDITIONS: Usually around dusk....more or less around dusk or just before dawn.
ENVIRONMENT: Thick woods with fields nearby that are heavily grown over. A good size lake in the immediate area.
Follow-up investigation report:
**** Follow up done by S.P. of Ohio ****
Arrangements were made to visit the property and talk with one of the other witnesses at a future date. The following information can be added.
When playing some various wildlife noises, the witness stated that the closest sound was one of the Ohio recordings on the BFRO web site. He also said that whatever was outside the camper made a remarkable growl. Other sounds included stomping noises and trees getting torn up. When asked about the coyotes, the witness said they were on the other side of the pond, and were howling, yelping and making more noise than he had ever heard from them. At this point they retreated back to the house instead of staying the night in the camper.
The next morning they returned to the camper and found an area where the grass and undergrowth had been torn up. It was 10 feet from the trailer on the one side where they felt the noise originated. A single footprint was found on a sandbar in a small creek on the property. The witness stated it was clearly made by a bare foot that was much bigger than his size 14 shoe.
