Teenagers see animal lying in the middle of the road near Schoal Creek.
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1972?

SEASON: Fall

STATE: Missouri

COUNTY: Jasper County

LOCATION DETAILS: Schoal Creek river, west side of the falls area

NEAREST TOWN: Joplin, MO

NEAREST ROAD: McClelland Park Road

OBSERVED: My sighting occurred many years ago, but few people would believe me, so I simply stopped telling people I actually saw the creature.

My boyfriend and I had driven down to the falls on Schoal Creek. The west side of the falls was accessed by a dirt road, hardly ever used, except by teens. The road angled down toward the river, and was hugged on the left by a small cliff, on the right by trees. The river must be about 8 foot below the road, and on that night we saw two men in a fishing boat in the river above the falls. There was a moon and very light out.

As we drove down, there appeared to be a large pile of fur in the middle of the road. My boyfriend stopped with his headlights still on the object. We were stunned when it stood. It looked at us for about five seconds. The fur covering its entire body was a dirty blonde color, with a darker area on its front chest/stomach area. I took this to be dirt from its slumber on the ground.

It just stood there, tall, but I couldn't give you an exact height, staring at us. Then it simply walked down the right side bank toward the river and dissappeared from view.

I remember looking out at the boat, wondering if we should say anything to the men, warn them?

But, before I knew what was happening, the car was backing up at a fast pace. My boyfriend was talking about going home, getting his brothers and friends, and their guns, and coming back. It took me awhile, but I finally talked him out of that. That wasn't easy.

It may have been that same winter a Neosho woman awoke to find footprints in the snow on her porch and around the house. They printed a picture in the paper, maybe the Joplin Globe.

OTHER WITNESSES: Us, and possibly anyone in the boat.

OTHER STORIES: A report in the Joplin Globe, including photo, was made of a house in Neosho, Mo, about 20 miles south of Joplin. It was winter, maybe 1972, or 1973. There were footprints on the porch and around the house.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Clear night, moonlight

ENVIRONMENT: Road is along river, dead-end, near old foundation of a mill? Above, on bluff is a house, nearly hidden by trees and brush.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Stan Courtney:

I spoke with the witness by phone.

The teenagers approached within eight to ten feet of the creature as it was lying on the road. The animal was at least eight feet tall and its face looked more human than apelike but extremely hairy.

The animal was very heavily built and had long arms.
