Possible sasquatch sighting around 1AM along highway leading into Port Hardy
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2025

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: August

DATE: 11

PROVINCE: British Columbia

COUNTRY: Canada

LOCATION DETAILS: Halfway between Port Hardy and the Highway 19/Bear Cove road intersection on highway 19

NEAREST TOWN: Port Hardy

NEAREST ROAD: Highway 19

OBSERVED: I arrived at the Port Hardy Ferry terminal about an hour later than expected following the gorgeous 16 hour ferry ride from Prince Rupert. This means I got off the ferry about 1am instead of the scheduled midnight arrival time, which is normal during the summer months.

I had called a simple hostel in Port Hardy from Prince Rupert a couple days earlier to book a bed to crash on once I had arrived in Port Hardy. As I was travelling by motorcycle, I was one of the first off the ferry, if not the first, as that is normal BC Ferry procedure. I was very familiar with the area around Port Hardy, but I knew I was going to take a right off the Bear Cove Highway onto Highway 19, which ends in Port Hardy I believe. I knew it was just 2-3 km, but I was eager to get into Port Hardy before the hostel closed up. I turned right onto Highway 19, and did notice a vehicle, which I'm confident was from the ferry as well, also turn right. I rode the bike along a dark stretch of the single lane highway for just a couple of minutes when I saw something large walking in the opposite lane moving in the opposite direction.

My very first thought was "what is a First Nations person doing walking in the middle of the road with a large fur coat"? I then pulled over onto the shoulder and looked behind me. The vehicle behind me was about 75 meters back from my position and was flashing its lites. I thought to myself that it must flashing its lites at whatever that thing was walking in the opposite lane as the vehicle was too far from me to be flashing its lites at me. I also think it either slowed down or stopped to observe what was in the other lane.

It was round this time I asked myself if what I had just seen was a possible sasquatch, and the I also thought about driving the bike back towards the creature. I decided not to kept riding into Port Hardy.

My bike is an older bike I was travelling old school, without a screen or gps, so, as I often did on my trip that summer, I stopped in Chevron gas station in "downtown" (it's a small town) Port Hardy to use Google Maps on my cell phone which I kept in my riding jacket. As I was figuring out where the hostel was located, an SUV drove by which I'm pretty sure was the vehicle behind me. I discovered on Google Maps that the hostel was just a couple blocks away. As I parked the bike in front of the hostel, I noticed the SUV also parked in front. I got off the bike and made my way to the front desk. The woman attending knew about and told me that she often has ferry users arrive at this late hour. She was checking in what I assume was the driver of the SUV and so I decided to ask the fellow if he had noticed that "guy" walking in the opposite lane of the highway. He looked at me with a noticeably pale expression and didn't respond. He finished signing in, grabbed his keys and left for his room. The woman behind the counter also felt the awkwardness of the exchange and said that he said almost nothing when he arrived. She surmised that he may have become seasick during the ferry ride.

I thought about telling the woman what I had seen, but it was late and I wanted to rest before continuing south down Vancouver Island early the next morning, which is precisely what I did.

The creature appeared at least 7 feet tall. It walked with a stoop, and the fur was long and seemed to flow as it walked. The fur was grey and black. I couldn't make out its face as I saw for only a second as I drove by.
