(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2001

SEASON: Spring

DATE: 12

STATE: Colorado

COUNTY: Park County

LOCATION DETAILS: Withheld at request of witness.

NEAREST ROAD: Park County Road 100

OBSERVED: At approximately 0030 hrs. on May 12, 2001, my children and I heard the worst sound we have ever heard in our lives.

We were sitting at our dining room table eating a late-night snack when suddenly this very loud, frightening human/animal-like cry came from about 200 feet from our front door. It lasted approximately seven seconds or so. This sound was like something you would hear in a horror movie. It sent chills up my spine and immediately made me sick to my stomach.

My kids and I were extremely frightened and we froze for about a minute or so. We could not move. It was like nothing we've ever heard before in our lives. My husband was gone at work, so it was that much worse. After we got over our initial shock, we ran quickly ran upstairs to my bedroom, where we remained until my husband came home.

After reading a report on (the BFRO) page where it describes a rooster/dog sound (SR # 529, August 2000, Park County), it sounded like if you put those two sounds together it would be very close, except 10 times louder. However, there is really no way to describe it exactly. It was unearthly! We are having a hard time getting over it.

ALSO NOTICED: See investigator comments below.

OTHER WITNESSES: Two young children.

OTHER STORIES: Not as of yet. We are new to the area.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was around 0030 hrs. Very dark. We are in a very wooded area.

ENVIRONMENT: Thick pine and aspen forests near Saddle Mountain. Lots of small ponds and lakes in the area.

Follow-up investigation report:

Excerpts from interview with witness, a 28-year old mother.

"I tell you it was the creepiest thing I've ever heard in my life --the tones it gave off. I've spent a lot of time living in the mountains. I've heard all sorts of animals, but never anything like this.''

"The day after we heard the noise, one of the dogs came back to the yard with something big in her mouth that looked like poop. It was huge. It had hair in it. The smell was really bad. It was really big. I tried to get it out of her mouth with a stick, but she just growled at me. It was definitely a huge poop. It was more like a horse smell than a human smell, but it was definitely not horse poop. The outside almost looked like Slim Jims, like it had a real thin skin. Something about it had that look to it, as if someone was stuffing a sausage."

"My two dogs are normally very aggressive. When they hear noises, like coyotes, they go chasing off into the woods. So when we heard this noise, I thought, where in the world are the dogs? They must be out in the woods. But when I took a quick peek out the window, I saw them both at the door huddled together. I was very surprised at that. They bark at even the littlest noises, then when there's something really loud, they're right by the door."

"So I brought them in the house, and about 10 minutes later, one of dogs started looking at the door from the living room, tilting her head side to side, and growling."

The witness estimated the vocalization came from the direction of a large pile of dirt that was pushed up in the front yard. She said they checked for tracks, but found none.

She also mentioned there were a number of broken trees in the area that were snapped at about the six-foot level. She said she will reexamine the breaks to see if twisting forces were involved.
