Report # 46502  (Class B)
Submitted by witness John on Thursday, September 11, 2014.
Homeowner continues to hear possible wood knocks and vocals behind his house near Linden
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2014

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: August

DATE: 24

STATE: Virginia

COUNTY: Warren County

LOCATION DETAILS: Confidential

NEAREST TOWN: Linden

NEAREST ROAD: Confidential

OBSERVED: I was outside on the back porch at about 8pm. First I heard what sounded like a tree knock in the woods behind the house, to the northeast and perhaps a quarter of a mile away, at most. About 5 minutes later, I heard a sound that started as a low rumble and progressed to what sounded like a deep "whoop". I went inside and turned off the outside lights behind the house.

The area is heavily wooded with very low traffic (10 cars on my road would be a heavy traffic day). We are very close to the Lake of the Clouds and several spring heads, with one spring head being located to the east of the house about 1/4 mile away. The wildlife is abundant, with a healthy population of deer, fox, quail and wild turkey. The houses are sparsely placed this high up the mountain, with a lot of wooded space between homes. There are some wildlife trails and four-wheeler trails in the area that the sound came from. The sound was far too deep to be a fox or any other animal that I can think of and did not sound like a deer call.

ALSO NOTICED: We hear "tree knock" sounds occasionally outside, but do not respond. We usually just head inside.

OTHER WITNESSES: None.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: It happened at night. It was fairly cloudy at this time of night, though the clouds cleared soon afterwards.

ENVIRONMENT: Hardwood forest nearby. 1 acre of cleared land in my yard. Closest neighbors were totally obscured by the tree cover. Our yard sits next to empty lots on the north side, leading to the wildlife preserve area.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Charles Kimbrough:

I spoke with the witness, "John". He was outside with his Mastiff. The dog is very protective and starts acting as if he sees something in the woods. There was a wood knock and a low growl. They normally just go in the house when this starts. But since the report was filed, they made a knock sound back and actually got a reply from another direction. While I was on the phone with the witness, he was hearing these same sounds coming from the woods.
