Camping kayakers report rock throwing harassment on North Fork of American River
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
YEAR: 2003
SEASON: Summer MONTH: August DATE: 21 STATE: California COUNTY: Placer County LOCATION DETAILS: [Investigator (MM) Notes: GPS for Pickering Bar: 39.146637, -120.842076 ] NEAREST TOWN: Colfax, California NEAREST ROAD: ? OBSERVED: My son & I wre camped at Pickering Bar on the N. Fork of the American river on August 21, 2003. We were eating supper after dark on the gravel bar when a boulder of perhaps 15 lbs. came flying through the air, from the direction of the woods, and landed in the sand next to us, only about 5 feet from us. It came with such velocity it left a large crater in the sand, and we heard it coming through the air before it hit. We shined our flashlights where it came from, and saw nothing. The gravel bar was about 150 feet wide with no brush or trees, and what ever threw it had to have thrown it from the trees, which were at least 150 feet away. No human could have thrown a boulder that size, that far. We had floated 15 miles of th river, and had not seen another person. Pickering Bar is remote and about half way on our float. ALSO NOTICED: very inclement weather, lull in it around 8pm when incident happened, then weather really let loose for rest of night OTHER STORIES: Yes, on this particular gravel bar TIME AND CONDITIONS: Happened about 8 pm, weather was thunder, lightening, and wind ENVIRONMENT: In the river canyon, forested, wide gravel bar
