Memory told of possible activity while trapping in Horicon Marsh
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1975

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: November

DATE: 1975

STATE: Wisconsin

COUNTY: Dodge County

LOCATION DETAILS: The Horicon Marsh is a huge area with many side roads leading to it, county trunk is just east of Waupun, has several roads into the marsh.

NEAREST TOWN: Waupun,Wisc

NEAREST ROAD: Hwy-49

OBSERVED: It was around 1975, a friend's family owned 80 acres next to a national wildlife refuge. My friend and I had run a trap line about a quarter mile or so and checked it daily after school. On one occasion after returning to our vehicle we heard movement at the top of the hill, roughly 80 yards or so. and a smell that to this day I've never smelled again. A rotten egg sulphur smell that was over powering. We left quickly and didn't run a trap line for quite awhile. Although this was quite awhile ago its the area that's key. This happened next to one of, if not the biggest national wildlife refuge areas, Horicon Marsh. If such a thing as Bigfoot exists, and I believe they do, you probably won't find a better place in the US because a lot of it is restricted, no hunting.Check it out it will not disappoint, the place is huge and scary.

OTHER WITNESSES: Myself and 1 friend. We were checking our trapline.

OTHER STORIES: Legend has it that when the state was mapping the area they came across some caves deep in the marsh. One particular one had deer piled in front of it with just the guts ripped out of them . They quickly left the area.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 4:15-4:30. Dusk clear chilly

ENVIRONMENT: Woods surrounded by huge marsh

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Rick Reles:

I spoke with this witness and found him to be credible. His reason for reporting on the Horicon Marsh area was to create awareness for the BFRO.

He said that when he and a friend had their experience in the marsh, they felt an overwhelming "Fight or Flight" response. The movement they heard was " very heavy", and they fled.

He also elaborated on the deer story, saying it was told to him by a local public figure. When the DNR was platting the marsh, they found caves and 15 - 20 gutted deer carcasses were stacked up outside of them. Telling me there have been weird happenings in the area for 30 - 40 years.

The Marsh is both a national and state protected wildlife area, approx 15 miles North/South and 5-7 miles East/West. Horicon Marsh is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the US. Fed by the Rock River which flows through the refuge, following a course through southern Wisconsin and eventually ending in the Mississippi River in Illinois. "Horicon" is a Mohican word for pure, clean water.
