Two witnesses and possible double sighting in the Waiparous Creek Provincial Recreation Area
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2007

SEASON: Winter

MONTH: February

DATE: 10th to 17th

PROVINCE: Alberta

COUNTRY: Canada

LOCATION DETAILS: Google earth positions in original e-mail to Gary Cronin

NEAREST TOWN: Cochrane, Alberta

NEAREST ROAD: Forestry trunk 940

OBSERVED: This took place in February 2007 during the week of 10-17th, not certain which day now. But at the time approx 2pm in the afternoon myself and a couple buddies were 4 wheeling on a trail (in the Wiaprous rec area) heading from North to South, we were coming up on the first creek crossing, just rounding the corner and as I was scouting ahead I noticed that someone was standing on the trail ahead of us across the creek. This person was wearing all dark seemingly almost reddish clothes and appeared to have on a big parka. I stopped and was watching this "person" and saw that it was looking at us but it was all one color (distance was approx. 400 meters) , no discernible features were noticed other than the one-piece color and no light colored face like I would have expected. This watching went on for less than a minute when he turned his head took two strides and disappeared into the densest part of the bush off the trail (heading east)... both my friend and I looked at each other and commented on how weird that seemed. What struck me at the time was how "smooth" those two strides were... they were graceful. At the time I just chalked it up to being a person as it wouldn't have been the first time I had seen someone walking around there in the winter but normally they stay on the trail... It wasn't till about a month ago after seeing a special on TV about the sasquatch that it hit me, the GPF creature walked the same way this thing did. I haven't really been able to put it out of my mind since.
There is no doubt in my mind that this was unusual and at the time both my friend and I commented on how weird that behavior was for a person. From my perspective and looking at all
the sightings in Alberta, it could very well have been a sasquatch, unfortunately we did not look for tracks or any other evidence since at the time we just thought it was human... but
the stride never did strike me right... in my estimation it covered about 20-25 feet in two strides. Also I am not unfamiliar with the woods, I have traveled and camped from
Waterton NP to past grand cache all along the forestry trunk and side roads for the last 20+ years and have never seen/smelt/heard/stepped in anything that I could say for certain was unknown.

ALSO NOTICED: After I sent my intial report myself and the other witness discussed the event at which time it became clear that he was watching a different animal/person as mine left the trail to the east and his left to the west... I did not notice his animal and he did not notice mine... he was parked behind me (i was leading) and we were communication via CB radios

OTHER WITNESSES: Yes, one other out of 4 people total. Prior to the incident we were driving 4WD's along a trail

OTHER STORIES: Yes, after the fact i was reading a book by Steinberg, Tom and he relates a story from the 80's and after reading it occurs to me that this other sighting was less than 3KM's from where we were. Also many sighting around Lake miniwanka which is due west of this area by about 15KM's.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Between noon and 2pm, clear, sunny and around -10 degrees Celsius

ENVIRONMENT: Pine/poplar forest, valley with a creek/beaver dam flowing West to East

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Gary Cronin:

Two different possible sasquatches witnessed at the same time by two witnesses. I have met with both witnesses and we drove out to the encounter location and spent some time going through the events of the encounter. The witnesses were driving off-road about 7km back off the main road. The first witness was slightly ahead of the other 4wds and came around a corner. He noticed what he believed was a person standing in the middle of the trail. After observing it for a short time it moved into the woods to the east. At this time, witness number two had driven up about 50 metres higher up the trail and observed something on the trail as well. After a few seconds he watched it go into the woods to the west. Neither of the witnesses discussed anything at the time but both felt something out of place had occurred. Only recently, after discussing the incident in detail, did the two witnesses discover that they had both seen a different creature. When we went and reenacted the events it became easy to understand how this occurred. Witness one's creature moved into the woods before the other witness drove up. Witness two stopped at a different angle than witness one and was able to see farther where the second creature was standing. The woods that they exited into would have provided ample cover for them. The frigid cold temperature approximately -10 Celsius(14 Fahrenheit) and no other vehicles sighted that day pretty much eliminates the possibility of humans. The odd sense of the creatures' movements also adds to the likelihood of a sasquatch encounter. Both witnesses have vast experience in the Alberta wilderness and are familiar with local wildlife.

About BFRO Investigator Gary Cronin:

Gary first became interested in sasquatch when he moved from Liverpool England to Calgary Canada in 1975. He soon came upon a book by a John Green and has been fascinated with the topic ever since. He has attended the 2007 Vancouver Island Expedition and the 2008 BC Coastal Expedition. He is in the field scouring the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies for evidence on a weekly basis. Gary was involved in organizing the 2009 and 2010 Alberta expeditions.
