Driver encounters bipedal animal standing on highway
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 1968?

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: July

DATE: 5th

STATE: Oregon

COUNTY: Grant County

LOCATION DETAILS: Too many years ago to give better location. Next time I travel the area in the motorhome I will try & look for it. It was a 2 lane HY & I think it was the one that goes from SE central Ore. & ends up in Pendelton Ore. to the North. I know there was a lake south of the Ore. border that people from miles around came to in order to watch the 4th of July fireworks. The State police were there for traffic control. That would make the sighting approx. 100 miles North into Ore. side of the border. It was a 2 lane highway & I believe it still is.

NEAREST TOWN: Seneca, Oregon

NEAREST ROAD: Highway 395

OBSERVED: You will find these are NOT human! The interesting thing is, the proportions of the body are the SAME as humans as far as length of arms & legs! Same goes for waist, hips, etc. HOWEVER, the neck is short & face is VERY ape like! The dead giveaway is the fact that the eyes are the same as the brown eyes of a dog! They reflect emerald green in the high beam car headlights! The one I saw had what appeared to be short black hair. Actrual length unknown, but NOT long or shaggy! The body appeared to be lean, yet muscular. NOT fat or overweight as I have seen in some photos! I would estimate the height to be 8 - 8 1/2 ft tall. It crossed the highway (one lane & shoulder) in 2 or 3 steps! It then proceeded up the bank & into the tree line. They are also nocturnal! I was on my way home from Carson City Nev. & was in Eastern Ore. when I saw it. Approx 1:30 to 2:00 AM. I was on a straight through drive to Seattle. No other traffic in the area. Unfortunately, my X-wife & kids were asleep in the car. The car was a 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible and had FOUR headlights-ALL on high beam! I got a good look at "IT"!!! Really took my breath away! I ws doing about 70 MPH when my lights caught the eye reflection. I rapidly decreased my speed & the damn thing just stood there like he owned the road! Maybe he was as supprised as I was? I had good visual on him for at least 10 seconds at close range. I have hunted in the mountains ever since I was small & I will guarantee this was NOT a bear or anything similar to it! This was in approx. 1968 on July the 5th. I never told anyone about it until these sightings became public & even then, I was careful as to whom I talked to! They would think I had gone off the deep end for sure!!! LOL!!! Please keep this confidential!

ALSO NOTICED: None, except a gasp from me & the hair on the back of my neck stood up!!! No sounds or anything! I just kept on driving----& wondering just what the hell that was!!!!!

OTHER WITNESSES: Unfortunately they were sleeping while I was driving!

OTHER STORIES: I have talked to a older woman in her 80's that saw the very same thing on Mt. Rainer when she was hiking MANY years ago! Do not know her name or how to contact her.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 1;30 - 2:00 AM. Dark clear night. No other traffic. Driving straight thru from Carson City to Seattle. No! I was NOT drinking! LOL!

ENVIRONMENT: Typical Central/Eastern Ore. Hot, dry, & some rather light pine forest that seemed to be somewhat scattered. I was more interested in what I saw in front of me the than the surrounding land!!!

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Dr. Wolf H. Fahrenbach:

Discussion with the eyewitness elicited enough information to define the location more closely than originally indicated.

He estimates that he got within about 40'-50' at the closest approach before the animal decided to move and could clearly see its facial features, as it was looking at the car directly. He emphasized its short neck and ape-like face with brow ridge and flat nose, the head shape closer to that of a gorilla than of a chimpanzee. He thought of it as a male, mostly by default. It left the road in long, unhurried steps.
