Witness describes possible call-and-answer vocalizations near Cleveland (Tennessee)
(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2007

SEASON: Spring

MONTH: April

STATE: Tennessee

COUNTY: Bradley County

LOCATION DETAILS: From Cleveland, go down Spring Place road to Keith Valley. I don't remember exact directions, but my in-laws house is in a fairly new housing complex and their road name is Cora Dr. Behind the house is their back yard, another back yard and a house facing keith valley and then on the other side of keith valley were woods that were being bulldozed during the day. Almost every body in the housing complex had dogs and they were barking like crazy when this happend.

NEAREST TOWN: Cleveland

NEAREST ROAD: Keith Valley

OBSERVED: my wife and i were talking to her brother and his girlfriend on the back porch of my in-laws. My wife and i were facing the house and my brother-in-law and girlfriend were facing us. In the midst of our conversation, we heard a loud scream. Growing up in the country and raised on a farm, i have heard most of the common North American animal calls. I have NEVER heard anything that screamed like this. We had about 300 yards of field and yards before it turned to woods. We didnt see it, but it sounded almost as if it were just behind us. At the same time, there was another approx. 1/2 mile down the road and they were yelling back and forth as if they were talking. The lungs on these creatures were amazing!

OTHER WITNESSES: yes, my wife, brother-in-law, and his girlfriend. we were just talking to each other when this happened. when we told my father-in-law about it, he said it must be the mule up the road. my brother-in-law now claims to believe that what it was, a mule or donkey. my family had mules. it was no mule or donkey!

OTHER STORIES: yes... on the interstate near cleveland [Tennessee] i had read that some truck drivers or something saw something of massive size like a bigfoot eating a dead dear or something like that.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was about 11PM and it was a clear night, i think it was almost a full moon so it was kinda bright, chilly(40 F ?)

ENVIRONMENT: there isnt much... just that where we think they were in the woods, it was being bulldozed, but i think they just started that day cause we didnt know they were doing it till the next morning when we saw the bulldozer for the first time!

Follow-up investigation report:

I spoke with the witness by phone and found him to be very credible with a good recollection of the event.

He and his wife and his brother were visiting with his in-laws at their home. His in-laws had recently moved to the Cleveland, Tennessee area from Detroit. Their home is in an area where approximately 15 houses sit in a half circle. There was one other house between his in-laws house and the woods.

On the evening in question the witness, his wife, her brother and her brother's girlfriend were on the back porch of his in-laws home when they heard an extremely loud 'scream' from the woods. The estimated distance was 300 - 400 yards. This scream was answered by another animal that was estimated to be approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile away. Calls went back and forth 6 or 7 times. The witness was stunned by the volume of the calls.
