(Show Printer-friendly Version)

YEAR: 2006

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: July

DATE: 9th

STATE: Utah

COUNTY: Uintah County

LOCATION DETAILS: 25 north of vernal Utah. Rural Route off the left hand side(small paved area with small map/sign) follow to National Forest Ranger station. no longer operational but rented out.

NEAREST TOWN: Vernal, Utah

NEAREST ROAD: 191 north

OBSERVED: Camping with family in Utah Flaming Gorge National Forest. We we're camping in a very desolate area about 25 miles north of Vernal Utah. We were in the middle of nowhere. The Road we took off of 191 North was long and unpaved. We camped for 3 days. There was cows grazing on the hills in the distance. My sister and I pitched a tent. My sister and I were annoyed by the constant mooing of the cows & the logging trucks the first night. The second night the cows settled down farely early around 12am and I noticed there was no other noises. In the early am there were no birds chirping or other little chipmunks running around. My sister was still sleeping and I was wide awake when I heard a whooping sound. Twice and very clear. I was trying to think of a bird that made that sound..but I couldn't. After I went on the BFRO website and listened to the whoop recording is when I realized that was exactly what I heard.

ALSO NOTICED: just the lack of other noises. It was very wierd.

OTHER WITNESSES: My sister noticed the wierd "lack of noise" but didn't here the whoops.

OTHER STORIES: no

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 7 am. sun was coming up and sky's were clear. About 60 degrees.

ENVIRONMENT: Mountains all around. Camping at a National Forest Ranger Station that was at the bottom of the mountains on either side. Creek to the left of the Ranger Station that widened further down to a river. birch forest to left, mountain sagebrush on hilltops.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator TF Zamiski:

I spoke with the witness on the phone 1/23/07.

She added location details. From 191 north of Vernal she turned left onto FR 020 and set up camp about 5 miles in.

The two whoops occured around 7am after a rather quiet night compared to the previous night when cattle and coyotes were heard. The sound was loud enough for her to feel it was close to their camp but hard to judge the actual distance.

After returning home she listened to alleged bigfoot vocalizations on this website. The sound was very similar to the first two whoops from the 1974 California whoops and knocks clip.
